H. Russ Brown is a nationally recognized and award-winning theatre artist / educator who has worked at theatres, colleges, and universities across the country for over 30 years. Currently serving as the Head of Theatre / Artistic Director at College of the Mainland in Texas City, H. Russ’ areas of expertise are acting, directing, voice / dialects, stage movement, musical theatre, children’s theatre, playwriting, and stage combat. A Fight Director / Certified Teacher with the Society of American Fight Directors, he has choreographed violence for 200+ productions as a highly sought-after fight choreographer at theatres from New York to Chicago to California and everywhere in between.
A nationally recognized playwright specializing in farce, H. Russ has written dozens of shows that have been professionally produced in theatres across the country. He has been honored numerous times at the national level for his plays including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts New Visions / New Voices award for his musical adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s classic short story, THE SELFISH GIANT, and national awards from Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for his downhome farce, STUD DUCKS AND HORNY TOADS, and his swashbuckling Victorian farce, A DIVINE KERFUFFLE.
H. Russ has placed a specific focus in recent years on writing farce with no gender-specific names or pronouns – to make casting incredibly flexible and to always make sure roles are going to the humans in the room who can best BRING THE FUNNY. H. Russ has taught / guest lectured at the University of Missouri-Columbia, the University of Houston, Texas Tech University, Illinois State University, North Carolina School of the Arts, Ball State University, Roosevelt University, Northwestern University, Iowa State University, Eastern Washington University, Prairie State College, Lon Morris College, and Western Illinois University – to name a few. He holds a B.S. degree from Texas A&M University and an M.F.A. degree in Acting from Western Illinois University. His greatest achievement, however, is his 35+ year marriage to his beautiful wife, Elizabeth, and his two amazing kids, Grant and Auben.
